10 Steps to Building a WordPress Website
As designers, we know that a great website starts with a solid, repeatable process. WordPress is our tool of choice for its power and flexibility, but you need a clear roadmap to go from concept to launch.
Phase 1: Planning & Setup
The foundation is everything. Don’t skip this!
- 1. 🎯 Define the Goal: Before any design work, clarify the site’s purpose. Is it to generate leads, sell products, or showcase a portfolio? Your main Call-to-Action (CTA) drives every design decision.
- 2. 🧭 Domain & Hosting: Secure a memorable domain name and choose a reliable, fast WordPress hosting provider. Performance is part of the user experience!
- 3. 🛠️ WordPress Installation: Install WordPress (most hosts offer a one-click install) and handle initial setup:
- Set Permalinks (e.g., to
Post Name). - Delete dummy pages and posts.
- Install an SSL Certificate (essential for security and SEO).
- Set Permalinks (e.g., to
Phase 2: Design & Development 🎨
This is where the magic happens, but with a structural approach.
- 4. 🖼️ Select the Theme/Framework: Choose a fast, flexible, and well-supported theme or a strong page builder framework (like Divi or Avada). This acts as your canvas.
- 5. 🧩 Essential Plugins: Install only the must-have plugins for:
- Security (e.g., backups, firewall).
- SEO (e.g., Yoast or Rank Math).
- Forms (e.g., WPForms or Contact Form 7).
- Pro Tip: Keep your plugins minimal to maintain speed and reduce security risks.
- 6. ✍️ Content First: Finalize the key content (text and high-quality images) for your main pages before diving deep into complex design. Design around the content, not the other way around.
- 7. 💻 Design & Customization (The Core Build):
- Global Styles: Set your brand’s color palette and typography across the site.
- Templates: Design the core page templates: Homepage, Inner Page Template, Blog Post, and Contact Page.
- Responsiveness: Crucially, design for mobile first! Ensure every element is perfectly responsive on all screen sizes.
Phase 3: Launch & Testing 🚀
Ready for the world to see your work? Almost!
- 8. 🧪 Testing & Review:
- Functionality: Test all forms, links, buttons, and e-commerce (if applicable).
- Speed: Check load times using tools like Google PageSpeed Insights.
- Cross-Browser: Verify the design looks correct on different browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari).
- Get a final review and sign-off from your client!
- 9. 🔎 Final SEO Check: Confirm title tags, meta descriptions, image alt text, and the XML sitemap are all in place.
- 10. ✅ Go Live! If you built on a staging/local environment, migrate the site to the live domain. If you used a “Coming Soon” plugin, now’s the time to disable it and celebrate!
